STEM Family Night

 S.T.E.M. Family Night

Mad Science brings families together to discover the amazing world we live in through STEM focused Family Nights. Our goal is not only to raise the understanding of science among our students through innovative and interactive science activities but to encourage parental involvement in science education- all in one family night!

The event is 2 hours of fun and engaging activities that address some of the cross-cutting concepts outlined in the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science. We start with a 45-60 minute high energy stage program presented to all the participating children and parents.  We even have opportunities for your volunteers to get involved!

These are just some of the topics to choose from:

Fire & Ice: Dry ice fog storms, bubbling potions that trap gas inside, and amazing chemical reactions

Up, Up & Away: The powers of air pressure, hot air balloons, the mad science hovercraft

In the second hour, your student participants break up into small groups and get involved in hands-on science activities in our STEM  Family Night  activity booths or stations. The following  are some sample themes; we have many other themes available:

States of Matter: Explore the states of matter and discover the extraordinary properties of dry ice. Learn about sublimation and create ‘smoking’ bubbles like you have never seen. Experience what molecular energy changes do inside a self-inflating balloon.

Electricity: Discover how lightning is formed. Experience the effects of static electricity. Explore conductors and insulators. Learn about plasma, the 5th state of matter.  Make and take home a static stick and amaze yourself how static electricity works.

Chemical and physical reactions –Making slime is a type of a chemical reaction. Learn what are polymers. Did you know that your DNA is a natural polymer and that it is a part of our everyday living? Learn the secrets of how our special polymer becomes snow or slime.

Color and Light: Enter the world of light and color. Exciting experiments on white light including color-wheel blending and spectroscopy introduce Newton’s color theory concepts.

Additional Information:

Equipment and Materials: Our instructors arrive in Mad Science lab coats at least 1 hour before the event to set-up the booths and tables.

Instructors: We recruit staff with a college or graduate degree in education or/and science or students working towards these degrees. Our instructors have experience in classrooms or with groups of elementary-aged children. They have clean criminal background checks and undergo our training process.
